Notary Commissions
A notary (attorney or non-attorney) must be commissioned in the parish in which they reside and are registered to vote to have a valid commission. Non-attorney notaries can have one additional commission in a parish where they have an office location. Non-attorney notaries who have passed the statewide exam are allowed to notarize anywhere in the state, but must hold their commission in the parish where they reside.
Act 856 of the Regular Session of the 2008 Legislature makes the Notary Division of the Secretary of State's office the centralized source of all notary applicants, whether new, parish changes, or attorney notaries. Beginning August 15, 2008 all forms and applications will be filed with this office. By August 11, 2008 these forms along with instructions will be available on their website at www.sos.louisiana.gov/notary. Any inquiries can be emailed to: notaries@sos.louisiana.gov.
