This drawing is probably the most popular – certainly the most borrowed for
museum exhibitions – in the Plan Book collection. Built in 1852, the Esplanade
Ridge mansion described by this 1860 drawing served as the Musson family home
in later days. The New Orleans Mussons were French Impressionist Edgar Dégas’s
maternal relatives. In the winter of 1872, the painter traveled from France to spend
a few months with them on Esplanade Avenue, and while there he created many
works of art. Some are portraits of family members who posed indoors and
outdoors on the fine grounds of this property.
The building was divided in two in the 1920s. The two sections still exist, side by side. The larger one’s address is 2306 Esplanade. |
